In using the term ‘spring’, most skiers and boarders think this is synonymous with skiing or riding in ‘slush’. Not so high in the Monashees. Late March and April are times of continued cold powder snowfalls interspersed with fair weather and sunshine. This time of year is a best kept secret amongst experienced heliskiers. And this is also a favorite time of year for the ski film teams. Why? Because at this time of year the snowpack is at it’s deepest, and is generally more consolidated and predictable. When the weather is stormy, we continue to ski the deep stuff in the trees. When the sun comes out, we generally head to the shaded north facing alpine chutes and bowls, where the snow continues to remain dry and deep. When conditions are right, we can ski in the sun in ‘corn’ snow part of the day, then shift to the powder slopes in the afternoon that are protected from the sun. During this time of the heliskiing ski season, we often get the chance to ski the ‘big’ alpine- open bowls and challenging chutes.
In the springtime, we often can go further into our vast permitted wilderness, looking for the ultimate run. There is also the advantage of the increasingly longer hours of daylight. This gives us the luxury to linger longer at lunch, and admire the surrounding scenery. The anticipated blue bird days also makes flying within the mountains that much more of a spectacular and memorable experience.
The 2008 season saw fresh snowfalls well into late April. You can check out the September issue of SKIING magazine to see some great powder shots, and watch Teton Gravity's movie 'Under the Influence" for the best look at our epic spring heli ski conditions.
While most urbanites and ‘lowlanders’ are cutting their lawns or waxing their cars at this time of year, you can be skiing deep dry powder and working on your ‘raccoon eyes’ suntan. So come out and join us for some of BC’s finest and exclusive heliskiing and heli-boarding. Small groups, Tones of fun, deep in the Monashees.
"Spring-Break" is also a favorite time to bring the family together to enjoy and heli-ski some deep powder in British Columbia. |
