To say I’m excited about the upcoming season would be the understatement of the millennium!!

Having been involved with Eagle Pass for the past 2 seasons and shared some tremendous skiing with many of you, I’m proud to be returning this season as the Ski Operations Manager and Lead Guide.  I am looking forward to keeping things slippery side down on the slopes and continuing to develop the EPH product following through with great skiing and service.

You may have heard some media reports of avalanche incidents in and around the Revelstoke area recently.  We here at Eagle Pass Heliskiing send our condolences to those recreational snowmobilers involved, and we are more than glad to have played a small part in one of the search and rescue responses.

These and other incidents aren’t related to our decision to close early, nor are they related to our operations.  That said, we wanted to make sure all of our guests have a clear context for our decision.  Namely, we made this decision based on the micro-conditions in our tenure, relative to our operations.  Conditions across British Columbia are varied, and our decision shouldn’t be construed as necessarily being relevant to the decisions of other commercial operations or backcountry recreationalists.

Eagle Pass Heliskiing has a safety program that utilizes best practices in avalanche safety.  Every client and guide is equipped with and trained to use a SnowPulse avalanche airbag backpack (for floatation and trauma protection), transceiver, shovel, avalanche probe, as well as a handheld radio for communications.  EPH also recommends use of helmets while skiing and snowboarding.

We would like to thank our guests for their continued understanding and support.  By rescheduling or refunding your package, we are living our commitment to providing you with the highest quality of service possible.

Eagle Pass Heliskiing guides groups of skiers and snowboarders from around the world.  Our tenured ski terrain encompasses 270,000 acres throughout the Monashee Mountain range of British Columbia and we have successfully finished our fourth year of operation.  We ski in small groups of 4 with a maximum of 12 guests.  We consider ourselves leaders in safety and offer the highest vertical guarantee in the industry.  Contact our office at 1-866-WAY-DEEP for availability for our 2010/2011 season.

This season we continued with exploration and new run development in our extensive tenure.  We found beautiful well spaced trees, burnt tree areas, open alpine slopes, and sparkling fresh snow.  We even explored for the first time a previously unskied zone that is covers 70 square kilometers (1700 acres)!  New run names include Tally-Ho, Lumberjack, Belgian Waffles, Goosebumps, The Italian Job, Overserved, and Hip-Cheque among numerous others.

Colin and Tim, both very experienced heliskiers, ripped up the alpine.  On Saturday they took a rest day and headed down to Halcyon Hot Springs for the day.  Another highlight was ancient glacial ice martinis, made from ice chipped from the Wolverine Glacier during one of the days out skiing.

Christian, Charles, and Philippe – also known as the ‘Men in Black’ – helped explore some northerly uncharted terrain and tackled some great alpine.  All three Quebecois were awesome skiers, and they didn’t stop until the sun was setting.

The steady sunshine during the end of the week made for a picture perfect end to another week at Eagle Pass Heliskiing – “Deep in the Monashees”.

Tim our most loyal guest and his son in law Garrett joined Iain and Colin for these 3 days as well.  Tim was able to show someone in his family what his love affair with powder was all about. Garrett caught on quickly and got right to charging powder runs in the alpine and trees.

Phil, John and Henry also joined us for a sampling of what Eagle Pass is all about for a day – there were big smiles all around at the end of their day out in the mountains.

Johan and Magnus made sure there was a spot and pre-booked with us.  It was a good thing as they scored a beautiful sunny day and skied 7400 metres!  They will have many photos and stories to share when they are back in Sweden.

After the 3 day guests departed Colin and Tim continued for the remainder of the week.  See the next story for their continued adventure.

Blue skies were predominant for the first few days.  This allowed for lunches in the sunshine and beautiful alpine runs, commencing with “Pete’s Run”, a dramatic pitch that they first skied and named last season.  A wolverine was spotted traveling in the valley adjacent to Wolverine Glacier, whose dry, sparkling snow provided plenty of enjoyment for everyone.  More perfect snow and awesome cruising lines were found in the sun-sheltered trees and open glades of future favorites, “Lumberjack” and “Tally-Ho”.

As the stormy weather moved in, we shifted to “Bullwinkle” and other exceptional burnt tree runs.  Even when a short-lived fog bank enclosed in on us, the team remained extremely positive and enjoyed the experience of a campfire in the woods!

The evening banter was always pleasantly loud and fun, with highlights being toasts to Will’s 60^th birthday and a trip to the nearby hot pools.
